COURSE INTRODUCTION & OUTLINE:
The Fair Housing Act is a U.S. federal law enacted in 1968 that prohibits discrimination in housing based on race, color, religion, sex, disability, familial status, and national origin. Its primary purpose is to ensure that all individuals have equal access to housing opportunities and to eliminate discriminatory practices in the sale, rental, and financing of housing.
The Act also mandates that certain new multi-family dwellings be designed and constructed to be accessible to persons with disabilities. The enforcement of the Fair Housing Act is overseen by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
