Course Description of Content to be Covered:
The Roman Empire, at its height (c. 117 CE), was the most extensive political and social structure in western civilization. By 285 CE the empire had grown too vast to be ruled from the central government at Rome and so was divided by Emperor Diocletian into a Western and Eastern Empire. The Roman Empire began when Augustus Caesar became the first emperor, Romulus Augustulus , was deposed by the Germanic King Odoacer (476 CE). Romans are famous for their advanced engineering accomplishments, although some of their own inventions were improvements on older ideas, concepts and inventions. Technology for bringing running water into cities was developed in the east, but transformed by the Romans into a technology inconceivable in Greece. The architecture used in Rome was strongly influences by Greek and Etruscans.
Central to this revolution is the mass production and widespread use of digital logic circuits, and its derived technologies, including the computer, the digital cellular phone, and the internet.
