“Geo Sink Holes – Swallowed Whole”
Duration of Course: 2 PDH’s (115 – 120 MIN.)
Course Description of Content to be Covered:
A sinkhole is also known as a cenote, sink, sink-hole, shake hole, swallet, swallow hole, or doline. Sinkholes are caused by karst processes – for example, the chemical dissolution of carbonate rocks or suffusion processes. Sinkholes may vary in size from 1 to 600 m (3.3 to 2,000 ft.) both in diameter and depth, and vary in form from soil-lined bowls to bedrock-edged chasms. Sinkholes may be formed gradually or suddenly, and are found worldwide.
Subsidence is the motion of a surface (usually, the Earth's surface) as it shifts downward relative to a datum such as sea-level. The opposite of subsidence is uplift, which results in an increase in elevation. Ground subsidence is of concern to geologists, geotechnical engineers and surveyors.
