This course provides engineers with a comprehensive framework for conducting technically sound incident investigations. Participants examine the full investigative process beginning with incident scene management and evidence preservation, followed by event reconstruction, failure analysis, and structured root cause evaluation. The course emphasizes the importance of applying the scientific method, maintaining professional objectivity, and integrating multiple forms of engineering evidence when developing investigative conclusions.

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Explain the role of forensic engineering in the investigation of industrial incidents, structural failures, and engineering system malfunctions.
- Describe the procedures used to secure incident scenes, preserve physical and digital evidence, and document conditions necessary for reliable forensic analysis.
- Apply event reconstruction techniques to establish incident timelines and identify initiating failures in complex engineering systems.
- Analyze common engineering failure mechanisms including fatigue, overload, fracture, corrosion, thermal stress, and pressure-induced rupture.
- Evaluate how energy accumulation and release mechanisms contribute to explosions, structural collapses, equipment ruptures, and other catastrophic engineering events.
- Apply structured root cause analysis methods such as the Five Whys technique, fault tree analysis, event tree analysis, and barrier analysis to determine underlying system failures.
- Assess the role of human factors including operator workload, situational awareness, decision-making, and human–machine interface design in engineering incident development.
- Examine organizational influences such as safety culture, communication practices, operational procedures, and management systems that contribute to engineering failures.
- Interpret engineering evidence including fracture surfaces, structural damage patterns, operational data logs, and laboratory testing results to support technically defensible conclusions.
- Evaluate the capabilities and limitations of artificial intelligence and advanced data analytics when analyzing large datasets during engineering investigations.
- Identify applicable regulatory requirements, engineering standards, and professional ethical obligations governing incident investigation and forensic engineering practice.
- Develop technically sound investigative conclusions and corrective recommendations that improve engineering system safety and reduce the likelihood of future incidents.
