Course Description:

 

This course describes the basic operations required to prepare a construction site before foundations can be poured and walls erected.  Site surveys, including construction surveys and the use of appropriate surveying instruments, are discussed first.  Then earthwork operations such as pioneering, grubbing, stripping, and drainage are introduced.  Soils testing is discussed.  Finally the permitting process, including utility interruption requests, excavation requests, and road closure requests is described.

 

Learning Objectives:

 

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Students will be able to conduct a site survey, including proper selection and use of surveying instruments;
  • Students will understand the types of and needs for permits;
  • Students will be able to classify soils based on soils tests;
  • Students will know how to apply the principles of differential leveling; and
  • Students will be capable of laying out building lines to determine the boundaries of the excavations.
